ANDREW “CHICK” LaMOTTE III

Andrew Richard LaMotte III, “Chick,” 73, passed away December 31, 2020, after a long battle with cancer.

Chick was born October 29, 1947, in Martins Ferry, OH.

Chick is preceded in death by his parents, Patricia (Hammer) and Andrew “Chick” LaMotte Jr.

He is survived by his soulmate and loving wife, Joyce (Smith), whom had been by his side since they were 16 years old; his daughter, LaNette Krob (Kevin); and son, Andrew “Chick” LaMotte IV; brothers, Michael LaMotte of Bridgeport, Mark (Beverly) LaMotte of Florida, David (Vickie) LaMotte of Arizona; special sister- in-law, Nancy Phillips of Pleasantville, OH; grandchildren, Amber, Madison, Haleigh, Shane, Andrew “Chickie” V; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Chick graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1965 and served our country in the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the purple heart for his injuries in battle, The National Defense Ribbon, The Combat Action Ribbon, and 2 Campaign Ribbons.

Chick was of the Methodist faith, and was retired from the postal service and coaching. He was a member of the Bellaire American legion, Bellaire Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Foresters Club, and Neffs Rod and Gun Club. Chick was an avid gardener, a dedicated reader, history buff, and loved to tell stories and recount memories (both true and fictional). He also adored travelling, and had extensive knowledge of every place he went, down to the map.

Chick was a wrestling coach who touched the lives of countless youth in the valley. He was awarded the 2002 OVAC Special Recognition Award, the 2003 Wrestling Coach of the Year, the 2006 Wrestling Coach of the Year, 2007 OHSWCA Wrestling Service Award, the 2017 OVAC Mr. Mat Award, and in 2014, was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. His spirit for wrestling, coaching, and impacting the lives of athletes spanned multiple schools across the Ohio Valley.

His family meant more to him than anything, and he was unendingly proud of them. The time he spent with his family and friends was priceless to him. Chick was one-of-a kind and a legend in every definition, adamant on learning all he could about the world, and lived his life to the absolute fullest, with his family by his side.

Friends and family will be received at the Wilson Funeral, 920 National Road, Brookside, on Tuesday, January 5, 2021, from 4-8 p.m., where services will be held on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at 11 a.m., with Rev James Hoff officiating, interment in Holly Memorial Gardens Pleasant Grove. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be, made to Valley Hospice, 10686 St. Rt. 150 Rayland, OH, 43943.
