VIRGINIA “GINNIE” BENEDETT

Virginia “Ginnie” Benedett, 96 of St. Clairsville, OH formally of Wheeling, WV, passed away Saturday, April 3, 2021 at Liza’s Place, Wheeling, WV.

She was born in Wheeling, WV on February 16, 1925, the oldest of six siblings to the late Parker and Anna Rebic Spurlin.

In addition to her parents, Ginnie was preceded in death by her husband, Ted; son, Ted, Jr.; siblings, Samuel, Parker, and Richard Spurlin; her baby sister, Betty Lee Spurlin and Jo Ann Manion.

She is survived by her son, Jack; daughter, Judi (John), nine grandchildren, Candice (Dave) Keane, Jack Benedett III, Mario Benedett, Vinny Benedett, Gino Antonio Tajo Benedett, Gabriella Maria Benedett, Matthew (Anna) Hladek, Mark (Jennifer) Hladek, and Lucas (Elizabeth) Hladek; great- grandchildren, Ava Grace Hladek, Halle Rose Hladek, Jackson Bennet Hladek, Kason Gladden Hladek, Hazel Delphine Hladek; and Isabella Mia Benedett; and several nieces and nephews.

Ginnie was an avid golfer, to say the least, and a longtime member of Belmont Hill Country Club, where she held the title of Club Champion many times over. She continued playing golf for more than 60 years and could be seen teeing off as recently as last fall with her beloved daughter at Wheeling Park. She mentored many golfers and loved passing on her knowledge, especially to the youth showing interest in the game.

Ginnie treasured family gatherings, in town and out, and the everyday time spent with the four generations of which she was the matriarch and a member of St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, Wheeling, WV.

After 96 active years of reading greens, raising a family, and telling ornery jokes, we say goodbye to the matriarch of our family, our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Ginnie Benedett. While of course we all mourn this loss, we are so proud to have known and loved such an active, fiery woman determined to make the world feel her presence (and often bend to her will). So many of us held our own special relationships with Ginnie, no more so than her daughter, Judi, who shared a bond with her mother rarely found in this world. Ginnie was a deeply loving, boldly honest force, a woman who stood out in every room. Golf outings and family cookouts, even vodka tonics, will never be the same.

A celebratory Mass will be held at St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church on Tuesday, April 6, 2021 at 11 a.m. with Pastor R. Paul Shafer officiating. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling, WV. Arrangements by Kepner Funeral Home, 166 Kruger St, Wheeling, WV (304-242-2311).

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Liza’s Place, 308 Mt. St. Joseph Rd, Wheeling, WV 26003; or St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, 141 Kruger St, Wheeling, WV 26003.
