R. DEAN CODDINGTON
R. Dean Coddington, 98, of St. Clairsville, Ohio passed away peacefully at Park Health Center on March 19, 2023 with his wife of 50 years by his side.
He was born in Red Bank NJ, son of the late Harold and Miriam Coddington on September 20, 1924.
During WWII, he served in the Army with the Signal Intelligence Corps in the Pacific. He worked with the team tasked with breaking the Japanese radio codes. After discharge, he attended and graduated from Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA. He then was accepted at Rochester Medical School in Rochester, NY. He graduated in 1951 and went on to study Pediatrics.
During his professional career, he practiced pediatrics for several years and then expanded his medical education at Columbia Medical School in the brand new field of child psychiatry. He became interested in academic medicine and for the next 30 years, he taught future child psychiatrists while also helping untold numbers of children and teens. He was on the faculty of the University of FL and was head of the child psychiatry at OSU and Louisiana State University during these years.
In 1985, he and his family moved to St. Clairsville where he started his private practice on Main Street. This was very meaningful to him for several years until his retirement. While in practice, he was the First Medical Director for several years at Fox Run Hospital, a newly opened psychiatric facility for children in the area.
The Methodist Church was very important to him. He served on a few committees but his main contribution was his wood working skills that he used through- out the church, including the cross on the altar, the bell tables and the shelves in the pastor’s office and church library.
He served in other areas as well. As a young person, he was an Eagle Scout. Locally, he was a former member of the Sunrise Rotary Club and the Viaduct Society of Bellaire.
His other interests were golf and model trains. He had an extensive train layout in his retirement community which afforded him much enjoyment in his later years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Lea Coddington at the age of 28.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Caroline: four sons, Bob Coddington of North Carolina; Lane (Darci) Coddington of Missoula, Montana; Dale Coddington of St. Clairsville and Jeff Coddington of St. Clairsville and two daughters: Carol (Bob) Sarafconn of Sterling Massachusetts and Heather (Josh) Witsberger of St. Clairsville as well as two granddaughters, Becky and Robin and three great-grandchil- dren, Claire, Pearl and Miriam.
As per his wishes, his body has been donated to science at the OSU College of Medicine. Also, as per his wishes there will be no memorial service. A private family luncheon will be held at a later date.
