RICHARD CROTHERS

Richard Snyder Crothers, a pillar of strength and kindness in his community, peacefully departed this life on May 20, 2024, at the age of 87. Born on February 20, 1937, in Washington, PA, to Gaylord and Pauline Carter Crothers. Richard’s legacy is one of love, dedication, and service.

Richard was a 1955 graduate of Washington High School. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Darlene Smith Crothers, who stood by his side through life’s joys and challenges. Together, they created a family filled with love and laughter.

Richard leaves behind a legacy of devotion as a father to six children: Doug (Marilyn) Crothers of College Grove, TN; Jim (Linda) Crothers of Clarington, OH; Roger Crothers of Columbus, OH; Jill (Suzie) Crothers of Blythewood, SC; Christy (Dave) Thomas of Clarington, OH; and John (Katrenia) Crothers of Waverly, WV. Richard’s spirit will continue to shine brightly through his grandchildren: Stacy (John) Wallace, Natasha (Nate) Coiner, Monique (Zack) Williams, Nathan (Mallorie) Crothers, DJ (Megan) Thomas, Amber (Michael) Thomas, Justin (Carrie) Thomas, Erika (Charlie) Logston, Austin Moore, Jacie and Jacob Crothers. He also leaves behind eighteen great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory and carry his legacy forward with pride.

Preceded in death by his parents, brothers Harry C. (Phyllis) Crothers and Roy M. (Darla) Crothers; and a brother and sister who died in infancy. Also, best friends and in-laws, Kay (Clayton) Boltz.

Richard’s commitment to his faith was unwavering. He was a lay church speaker at the age of 17 and followed it though till he was no longer able to see. As he was a dedicated member of St. Johns United Church of Christ but was active in other churches in Monroe County and the Pioneer Larger Parish. In his professional life, Richard was a stalwart of industry, retiring from IBM after 35 years of dedicated service. Yet, his entrepreneurial spirit truly flourished through helping others with general construction until his retirement with IBM and the start of Crothers Electric Inc. in 1994; a small business he owned and nurtured for an impressive 26 years. His dedication to his craft and his customers was unmatched, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Beyond his professional achievements, Richard was known for his adventurous spirit, his mischievous sense of humor, and his profound love for animals and the land. He approached life with a fearless determination, never shying away from taking risks or pulling a good-natured prank. His love for his family, his community, and the world around him was boundless, leaving an enduring legacy of joy and laughter in his wake.

A celebration of Richard’s life will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2024, from 1:00 pm until time of service at 2:00 pm at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ 303 S. Main Street Woodsfield, OH to honor his memory and the profound impact he had on those around him with Rev. Kirk Bruce officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Parkinson’s Research, American Cancer Society, or any children’s help group of your choice.
