RICHARD HEATHERINGTON

Richard Wayne Heatherington joined our father in heaven on Thursday, April 18, 2024. “Pap,” as he was lovingly called, will be dearly missed.

He was born in Bellaire, Ohio to William and Jeanne V. Heatherington (nee Cavanaugh) on November 19, 1946. Soon after graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 17.

He served as a paratrooper during the Vietnam War as part of the 173rd Airborne Division (Sky Soldiers) and the 101st (Screaming Eagles). Being a proud Vietnam Veteran, he continued his service as a lifetime member of the local American Legion (Post 52), where he led as a commander for 2 years and a second-vice commander for 3 years.

He retired ‘to the lake’ after working for many years in construction as a cement layer. An avid gardener, fisherman, and builder, he would often be found outdoors working on a new project. He loved football – being an unwavering fan of the Cleveland Browns and The Ohio State Buckeyes – and watched countless hours of westerns in his free time.

Pap also served as the patriarch of a beautiful family. He is survived by two siblings, his former spouse, his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. We will carry his larger than life personality and quick-witted sayings with us indefinitely. Until we meet again… say goodnight, Dick!

A celebration of life will be held at the VFW Post 10539, Okeechobee, FL on Sunday, May 19. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the National Veterans Memorial and Museum in Columbus, Ohio.

“Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven…”
