JOSEPH COSTAIN

Joseph Edric Costain, Jr., 94, of St. Clairsville, Ohio passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born August 26, 1930 in Wheeling, West Virginia, a son of Joseph Edric and Hazel Virginia Knight Costain, Sr.

Joe proudly served our country and retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer having served in Korea and Vietnam Conflicts. Following his time in the military, he worked for the former Picoma Industries, Ziegenfelder’s Popsicle Factory, Culligan Company and was the former Sexton of Greenwood Cemetery in Wheeling. He was a member of Harbor of Hope Assembly of God Church and American Legion Post 159, both of St. Clairsville.

He was an avid fan of the St. Clairsville Red Devils and THE Ohio State Buckeyes. He enjoyed antique cars, car shows and long rides in the country.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Hazel Virginia McIntire, Mary Isabella Fox and Elizabeth Jane Martin-Warrick; a brother, Russell Lyons Costain; a grandson, Brian Costain.

Surviving are his loving wife of 72 years, Joanne Louise Roscoe Costain of St. Clairsville; his children, Joseph Edric (Ellen) Costain, III of Toms River, New Jersey, Jerry Lee (Charmaine) Costain of Ligonier, Pennsylvania and Jacquelyn Louise Greenwood of St. Clairsville; a sister, Donna Jean Herrlein of Brilliant, Ohio; four grandchildren, Kyle and Douglas (Layla) Costain, Caleb and Cara Greenwood; five great grandchildren. Parker and Myah Costain and Jolie, Cason and Adelaide Benoit.

Family and friends will be received on Tuesday from 11:30 am until time of funeral services at 1 pm at Harbor of Hope Church, St. Clairsville with Pastor Dean Myers officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville with full military graveside honors conducted by the Belmont County Veterans Association.
