RUSSELL BURKHART

Russell Andrew “Russ” Burkhart, 84, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his residence in Bellaire, Ohio on August 26, 2025, surrounded by his loving wife, Betty.

He was born May 28, 1941, in Powhatan Point, Ohio, a son of the late John and Mona Marie (Ramsey) Burkhart.

Russ dedicated much of his career as a Miner Helper Operator with Windsor Coal Company, where he was known for his hard work and commitment. Outside of his profession, Russ had a passion for working on cars and cherished classic automobiles. His love for these timeless machines was well-known among his family and friends.

Russ was a member of several community organizations through- out his life. He attended the Bellaire Eagles and was a proud member of the Ohio River Valley Elks in Martins Ferry, Ohio, and the United Mine Workers. He served his community as a former Bellaire firefighter and EMT. Russ was also a proud parishioner of St. John’s Catholic Church in Bellaire.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, John Burkhart and sister, Hazel Lucas. Russ leaves behind a legacy of steadfast love and dedication to his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Betty Olack Burkhart, who remained by his side; his children, Anita (James) Usnick of Jacobsburg, Ohio, John Olack of Dayton, Ohio, and Charlotte (Paul) Ostrander of Bellaire, Ohio. He is also survived by his sisters, Dee (Robert) Allison of Michigan and Joann Burkhart of Mingo Junction, Ohio. Russ was a proud grandfather to “the pride and joy of his life” Alannah, Lauren, and Ethan Ostrander. Additionally, he leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are to be received on Friday, August 29 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at the Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Home 441 37th Street, Bellaire, Ohio. Additional visitation will be held on Saturday, August 30, at the Funeral Home from 10:00am until 10:45am. Funeral Mass will be observed at 11:00am at St. John’s Catholic Church, Bellaire, Ohio with Father Daniel Heusel as celebrant. Final arrangements are at the convenience of the family.
