MARY ELLEN PALENICEK

The world lost a true firecracker this week. Mary Ellen Palenicek, 94, passed away peacefully on October 7, leaving behind a trail of laughter, love, and a legacy of fierce independence that won’t soon be forgotten.

Born with a spark that only grew brighter with age, Mary Ellen lived life entirely on her own terms — and heaven help anyone who tried to tell her otherwise. She spoke her mind, fought for what she believed in, and never let anyone give her an ounce of nonsense. Her sharp wit, stubborn streak, and soft heart made her unforgettable to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Mary Ellen was a longtime member of Bellaire Christian Church and spent many years working hard and making friends at A&P and Suter’s IGA, where she was known for her quick humor, tireless work ethic, and ability to keep everyone in line — customers and coworkers alike. She was the kind of woman who got things done, didn’t sugarcoat a thing, and somehow made everyone love her for it.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Steve. Rumor has it, he is already bracing himself for her arrival and her opinion on how things are being run up there.

She is survived by her devoted children, Steve Palenicek and Marla Krupnik, her adored grandchildren, Stevie, Abby (Jake), and Rayla, and her beloved great- grandchildren, Stefan, Mason, Kamden, Brayson, and Maverick, all of whom learned from her how to be brave, bold, and unapologetically themselves.

In her 94 years, Mary Ellen saw the world change in countless ways, but her spirit remained unshakable — proof that grit, humor, and love can get you through just about anything.

A private family gathering was held to celebrate her extraordinary life, likely with a toast (or three) in her honor. Because if there’s one thing Mary Ellen would want, it’s for everyone to raise a glass, tell a good story, and keep giving life hell — just like she did.
