HERBERT EUGENE THOENEN
Herbert Eugene “Gene” Thoenen, 94, of St. Clarsville, Ohio, went home to be with his Lord, surrounded by family on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at Shadyside Care Center.
He was born in Bellaire, Ohio, on December 9, 1931, son of the late Herbert Athens Thoenen and Virginia Bass Thoenen.
Gene was a retired senior systems analyst from Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Corporation. He was a member of Thoburn United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and served as a Sunday School teacher for 40 years. Gene also was a member of Barb’s Boys, singing for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Judith Schanks.
Gene is survived by his loving wife of 75 years, Arlie Jean Hall Thoenen; his four children, Debbie (David) DelGuzzo, LuAnn (Ed) Exner, Cathy Jo (Gordon) Martin, and Kirk Athens (Peggy) Thoenen; twelve grandchildren, and 31 great grandchildren.
Family and friends will be received on Tuesday from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville, Ohio.
Visitation will again be held on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until time of funeral service at 12 p.m., with Pastor Zach Thoenen officiating. A private burial will be held following the service in Belmont County Memorial Park Cemetery.
