Matthew Robert Schrum, 40, of St. Clairsville, Ohio, passed away on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Trinity Health, St. Clairsville hospital.

He was born March 4, 1985, in Wheeling, WV.

Matthew lived with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome, but he was far more than a diagnosis. He had a sparkle in his eye and found joy in the simple things he loved–his music, his portable DVD player, his toys, his blocks, and good food. He connected with people in quiet, meaningful ways, often by holding a thumb and looking directly into your eyes, reminding those around him of the power of presence and connection. Through his life, Matthew quietly reminded others that love is not measured by ability, achievement, or words.

Matthew’s family is deeply grateful to all who cared for him over the years–his babysitters, caregivers from various agencies and independent providers, the staff at Tomorrow’s Corner, and all those whose steady, loving care made his life the best it could be.

Matthew was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Harry and Sara Jane Schrum; his maternal grandparents, Charles and Dorothy Mae West; and his uncle, Mark West.

Matthew is survived by his parents, Robert Schrum and Lynn West Schrum; his brother Brad (Amanda) Schrum; nieces, Isabelle and Eliana Schrum; and his uncle, Dan (Debbie) Schrum and their family.

Family and friends will be received at Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville, on Saturday, January 3, 2026, from 2 p.m., until time of service at 4 p.m. with Brad Schrum officiating. Private burial will be held in Belmont Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be made in Matthew’s memory to the Cornelia de Lange Foundation, 30 Tower Lane, Avon, Connecticut 06001.
