LEONARD “LEN” SMITH
Leonard Eugene “Len” Smith, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026, in Bridgeport, Ohio, at the age of 77. Len was born on June 17, 1948, in Bellaire, Ohio, to the late Donald and Evelyn Smith.
Len graduated from Shadyside High School in June of 1966, and he furthered his education at the DeVry Technical Institute of Chicago, where he honed his skills and passion for engineering. He proudly served his country as an Army field medic stationed at Fort Hood for two years, a testament to his dedication and service.
Len’s professional career was marked by his significant contributions as the Chief Electrical Engineer for both WTRF and WTOV 9, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and commitment to his craft.
On June 17, 1972, Len married the love of his life, Mary Anne, marking the beginning of a beautiful partnership that spanned more than five decades. Together, they built a loving family and shared countless cherished memories.
Len had a zest for life and pursued a variety of interests with great enthusiasm. He was a member of Artworks and a founding member of the Shutterbug Camera Club. A talented photographer, Len captured the world through his lens with creativity and passion. He also had a deep appreciation for music and astronomy, finding joy and inspiration in their beauty.
Preceded in death by his parents, Len leaves behind a loving family to cherish his memory. He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Mary Anne Smith; his sons, Bryan (Pamela) Smith and Ben (Rebecca) Smith; his brothers, Paul (Janice) Smith and Harold Smith; and his grandchildren, Brody, Rylan, Kinley, Nevaeh, and Evelyn Smith. He will also be dearly missed by his nephew, Justin Smith, and a host of extended family and friends.
Family and friends are welcome to pay their respects during visitation on Monday, April 6th, 2026 from 1-3 PM and 5-7 PM, and again on Tuesday, April 7th, from 10-11 AM, followed by a service at 11 AM, at the Bauknecht-Alt- meyer Funeral Home – Shadyside Chapel, located at 3900 Central Avenue in Shadyside, Ohio. Following the service, military rites and a graveside service will be held at Powhatan Cemetery, where Len will be laid to rest.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the nurses, aides, and staff of Rolling Hills Rehab & Care Center and Valley Hospice for their exceptional care and compassion.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Len’s honor, supporting continued efforts to combat this challenging disease.
Len’s memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, and his spirit will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
