JOHN HUGHES

John Henry Hughes, 84, of Columbus, Ohio, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at OSU Wexner Medical Center.

He was born January 7, 1942, in Cleveland, Ohio, a son of the late James Wesley Hughes and Mary Kostelia Hughes.

A 1960 graduate of St. Clairsville High School, John was an Associate Professor of Medical Microbiology at The Ohio State University. For more than 30 years he was a board member of the American Board of Bioan alysts, St. Louis, MO. His passion for sharing the Gospel with others was first and foremost in his life as evidenced in his serving with the Bill Glass Prison Ministry and faithful attendance at Dublin Baptist Church. He also served at the Stowe Soup Kitchen for many years. John had a love for running. He proudly supported his grand- children, attending their many activities and events.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Shirley Hughes.

John is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Laura Jo Greenlee Hughes; four children, Paula Jo (Brian) Thomas of Angola, IN, Jennifer (Art) Carr of Wooster, OH, Darrell (Michelle) Hughes of Columbus, OH and Eric (Shelagh) Hughes of Delaware, OH; a brother, Jim Hughes of Pearland, TX; thirteen grandchildren, Nathan Thomas, Erin Thomas, Rebekah (Drew) Reed, Evan Hughes, Cameron Carr, Ethan Hughes, Kyle Hughes, Kaitlyn Carr, Makella Hughes, Aubrey Hughes, Brady Hughes, Sadie Hughes and Willow Hughes; and a great grandson, Alexander Reed.

Family and friends will be received for a visitation at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville, Ohio, on Monday, July 6th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, following the visitation there will be a graveside service held at the Rock Hill Cemetery, Bellaire, Ohio, with Pastor Arthur Carr officiating.

A Memorial Service will be held at Dublin Baptist Church Tuesday, July 7th at 4:00 p.m. Family and friends will be received prior to the service at the Church from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dublin Baptist Church, 7195 Coffman Rd. Dublin, OH 43017 or the Bill Glass Prison Ministry, 1101 S Cedar Ridge Drive, Duncanville, TX 75137.
