Clark Gable celebration unfolds Monday

TIME TO celebrate the birth of one of Harrison County’s most famous sons.

The Clark Gable Foundation will hold a celebration Monday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to mark the 109th anniversary of the birth of the “King of Hollywood.”

Gable was born on Feb. 1, 1901 and became one of the most famous and beloved movie stars of all time.

The Gable Foundation has acquired the site of Mr. Gable’s birth on 138 Charleston St. in Cadiz and has reconstructed the home where he and his parents resided.

The building is operated as a museum and gift shop. The exhibit includes many items of Gable memorabilia, including items donated by his fans. The collection has grown with the donation of a large collection of items belonging to Gable’s wife, actress Carole Lombard.

In addition to a cake and coffee celebration, the foundation will also be showing one of Gable’s movies throughout the day.

The public is encouraged to attend the celebration.

For more information, call the foundation at 740-942-GWTW (4989).

DUE TO a scheduling conflict with Wallace Lodge, the Cadiz Community Recognition Banquet has been changed to Saturday, March 20.

This is the 12th year for this annual event, which seeks to recognize individuals, businesses and organizations for their efforts to improve and help the Village of Cadiz. Awards are given for beautification, organization of the year, business of the year, Citizen’s Choice, in addition to those honored by the Cadiz Woman’s Civic Club, the Cadiz Lions’ Club and Sally Buffalo Park.

“It is always a fun occasion. It is good for a community to come together and celebrate the good things that have happened,” said Jackie Hutyera, who chairs the event. “As for the date change, these things happen. The Fair Board had scheduled their fund-raising dinner for the same night and had already sold some tickets, whereas we were just about to begin our sales. We were happy to accommodate the situation.”

Tickets for the Cadiz Community Recognition Dinner are $25 per person and are on sale now at the Cadiz/Harrison County Visitors Center or at National City Bank.

For more information, call Hutyera at 740-942-3242 or the Visitors Center at 740-942-1102.
