County fair primed to unfold Tuesday

  • THE ANNUAL Harrison County Fair will be held July 6-10 at the fairgrounds at 550 Grant Street, Cadiz.

Daily gate admission for those ages three and up are available for $6. The price includes all rides except inflatables. Senior Citizens are admitted free of charge to Tuesday only. A week-long fair pass may be purchased for $25.

Senior Fair activities include Tuesday, flag raising, open class rabbit and sheep judging, department judgings and a talent show at 7 p.m.; Wednesday, open class poultry judging, scarecrow contest voting, hay and forage judging at noon, open class beef judging, auction of baked and canned goods 5 p.m., Buckeye Horse Pullers Association pull at 7 p.m.; Thursday, open class dairy judging, gift basket silent auction, 10 a.m. to close, scarecrow voting ends at 7 p.m. with winner announced at 8 p.m., Rough Truck pull at 7 p.m., open class market goat judging; Friday, table setting judging at 10:30 a.m., demolition derby 7 p.m. and gift basket silent auction bid closes at 9 p.m.; Saturday, farm stock tractor pull at 9 a.m., horseshoe tournament 10 a.m., Kiddie Tractor Pull, 5 p.m., Truck and Tractor Pull, 7 p.m., along with the election of fair board directors.

All open class animals will be released at midnight. Release of Department 7-12 and scarecrows is Sunday from 12-4 p.m.

Junior Fair activities begin Monday with animal weigh-ins. Tuesday’s activities in the rabbit, sheep, showmanship and swine market shows while Wednesday will include the poultry, beef and steer shows. On Thursday, the dairy show, saddle horse show and goat show will be held. Friday includes PAS and Versaltiy, cat and dog shows and the livestock sale which begin at 4 p.m. A horse fun show will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday along with the supreme showmanship at 3 p.m. and a square dance from 8:30-11:30 p.m.

All junior fair animals will be released on Sunday.

AND NOW for something completely different to do in Harrison County. How about attending a flute recital performed by the master class of a world renowned artist?

Harrison County is lucky to count among its residents Bernard Z. Goldberg. He is a retired Principal Flutist of the Pittsburgh Symphony. He has had a long and distinguished career as one of the world’s leading flutists.

Once a year, Goldberg offers a Master Class in flute. Students apply from all over the world to participate in this concentrated forum amid the peaceful and relaxed atmosphere of Piedmont. This year, seven students from the United States, Mexico and Korea are attending the class.

At the conclusion of the seminar, the students give an open recital free to the public. This year, it will be on July 3 at 3 p.m. at the Lake Piedmont Inn (on S.R.22 across from the rest area). Refreshments will be served. For more information, call 740-968-0150.

WORK WILL begin next week to resurface almost four miles of U.S. Route 22 in Jefferson County.

On Wednesday, July 7, U.S. 22 will be resurfaced from the Harrison County line to just east of the SR 152/Bloomingdale Exit.

One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction.

ODOT’s contractor for this $2.8 million project is Shelly & Sands Inc., from Zanesville, Ohio, and the completion date is September 30, 2010.

Cadiz American Legion Post 34 Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion will hold a breakfast on July 3 and 4 at Wallace Lodge in Sally Buffalo Park, Cadiz. The breakfast will run from 8 to 11 a.m. both days.

A corn hole tournament, with registration beginning at 1 p.m., will begin at 2 p.m. at the same location. Cost for the tournament is $20 per team.

The events are being held in conjunction with the Fourth of July celebration which is held annual at the park.

SCIO COMMUNITY Park will hold an Independence Day Celebration today sponsored by the Scio Civic Club.

Beginning at noon, a flag raising and Star Spangled Banner led by Pat Galbraith and from then on all kind of activities with duck race, concert, car show and fireworks around dusk. The rain date will be Monday.

There will be lots and lots of good food available. Many organizations will be participating. Everyone is welcome.
