Freeport celebrating Bicentennial

RESIDENTS OF Freeport will be celebrating the community’s Bicentennial with a musical revue this weekend.

The event will be presented on the stage of the former Lakeland High School on Sept. 3 and 4.

The revue will begin at 8 p.m. nightly, with doors opening at 7 p.m. Admission to the event is free. However, a free-will offering will be taken to help defray expenses for the production.

Under the direction of Greg Milleson and Joyce Lannum, a cast of 26 singers and actors will present a variety of chorus numbers as well as solos, duets and ensembles. Historical skits, written by Jane Hughes and Sharon Gump, will be presented depicting interesting characters and events throughout the 200 years in the village of Freeport. Hughes will also serve as pianist for the revue.

IN ADDITION to the Bicentennial activities in Freeport, a fundraising bake sale will be held at the village firehall on Saturday to benefit Zack Jones, a local teen who is currently undergoing medical treatment for a tumor. A car wash will also be held on Saturday for Jones. It is being sponsored by 4-H Club members from throughout the county and will be held along with the bake sale.

Another event, a benefit raffle, is also being held for an Ohio State recliner chair. Tickets, at $1 each, are available by calling 740-942-3099.

All proceeds from the events will be used to costs related to his medical care.

THE JEWETT Methodist Church will host their 26th Annual Effie Stewart Chicken Barbecue today at the Jewett Methodist Church starting at 4 p.m.

During the social time there will be a silent auction with plenty of items to bid on. Some of the proceeds will be donated to the community’s park, museum and fire department.

Also on the church’s agenda is the Community September Harvest Celebration which will be held at the Jewett Park the following week on Saturday, Sept. 11.

One of the many contests offered will be a bake-off offered to men, women and children with a grand prize of $25 for the adults. A children’s bake ware set will be the prize given out to the child winner. Contestants may drop off their baked goods between 10 and 11 a.m. to the park. Ribbons will be awarded in all categories. Cake mixes, pies, cookies of all sorts, etc. are welcome. Be creative!

CONGRATULATIONS TO Greta Christian who has retired after many years of employment with the Puskarich Public Library System.

The employees of the library recently honored Greta with a retirement party. According to the celebrants, the laughter poured throughout the evening as her 33 years of service became the center of good hearted jokes. Greta’s family and closest friends were some of the many guests attending, enjoying the stories and laughter.

Best wishes go to Greta who will be greatly missed as the head of circulation of the Puskarich Library in Cadiz. Her smile and laughter will be a great memory for the public and her co-workers to cherish. As it was said on a novelty t-shirt to Greta, “Old librarians never retire, they just keep getting renewed!”

SPEAKING OF the library system, the Puskarich Library on East Market St., Cadiz, will host “An Afternoon of Baseball” with Ohio University Professor Charles Alexander on Oct. 2 from 2-3 p.m.

Professor Alexander has written numerous books including biographies on Hall of Famers Ty Cobb, John McGraw, Rogers Hornsby and Tris Speaker.

The event is open to all ages and a book signing will follow. Those wishing to have a book signed should bring along that copy.

THE HARRISON Central Cheerleaders will sponsor a day camp on Sept. 11 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The camp is structured for girls in kindergarten, first and second grades. There is a $25 fee for each camper and that cost includes admission to varsity football game when the Huskies hosts the Martins Ferry Purple Riders on Sept. 17.

Camp t-shirts are available at $10 each. Deadline for registration is today. Registration may be made by mailing a $25 check and the child’s details to Marsha Dodds, 44845 Old Hopedale Road, Cadiz 43907. Additional information may be obtained by calling 740-942-8452.

THE FOURTH annual Cadiz Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual firemen’s festival on Saturday, Sept. 11, with activities scheduled to begin at noon along the fair route running from the square to the fire department.

Organizers will offer food, rides, DJ, games, raffles and a beer garden. A cornhole tournament will begin a 1 p.m.

The annual firemen’s fair will begin at 5 p.m. with lineup to begin at 4 p.m. on Martin Ave. The parade will be followed by a firemen’s water battle. Those wishing to participate are asked to bring their own equipment.
