Mine rescue team receives recognition

CONGRATULATIONS TO the Hopedale Mine Rescue Team which earned top honors at the Third Annual Mine Safety Competition held in late September at the newly named Jerry L. Stewart Mine Safety Training Center in Cadiz. The group garnered a first place finish in mine rescue and third place in the smoke contest. Ten teams from Ohio and West Virginia participated in the competition.

THE HARRISON County Historical Society will hold its fourth annual Cemetery Walk on Oct. 20 at the Freeport Cemetery.

Local historians will relate various stories to those attending the walk which is open to the public. Participants are asked to bring along a lantern, flashlight or other luminary.

HARRISON COUNTY Sheriff Ronald “Joe” Myers has announced his office’s new Web site that provides a vast wealth of information to the public.

Sheriff Myers said the site went online on Oct. 1 and that it is constantly updated giving an overview of activities, programs, history and services provided through the office.

A section for public announcements is available, along with a listing of frequently asked questions, sheriff’s sales and links to a variety of law enforcement departments such as the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, Buckeye Sheriff’s Association and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Myers said Corrections Officer Danny Rapavi and Detective Eric Wilson attended a two-day course through the Ohio Peace Officers Training Association (OPOTA) to learn about Web design before working on the project.

THE DEERSVILLE Community Players will present their fall production of “Jury Room” this weekend and also next weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, at the Deersville Community Theatre.

Box office hours are noon to 4 p.m. daily except Sunday for the run of the show. To order tickets, call (740) 922-4622. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. All seats are reserved.

Doors open one hour before curtain time. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees begin at 3. Tickets should be picked up a half-hour before curtain time.

THE SCIO Firemen’s Ladies Auxiliary is hosting a card and game party today from 6:30-10 p.m. at the firehall. Cost is $7 per person or $20 for a table of four. Bring your cards and games. A salad bar and drink will be provided.

A CHICKEN Dinner will be hosted by the Cadiz EMS on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A GOSPEL Fest will be held Sunday beginning at 2 p.m. in the auditorium at Harrison Central High School on East Market Street in Cadiz.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the school alumni association.

A HAM loaf dinner will be held Oct. 20 at the Bowerston First United Methodist Church.

A free-will offering will be taken during the dinner which runs from 4:30-6:30 p.m. A bazaar will also be held.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the missions of the church.

ON SATURDAY, Oct. 23, a ladies retreat will be held and is open to all women.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Moorefield Community Center.

Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish for the salad luncheon. Table service will be provided.

In addition, guests are asked to bring a wrapped item for a white elephant auction.

Churches sponsoring the event include Asbury Chapel, Holloway, New Athens, Piedmont, Rankin and Pleasant Valley United Methodist churches.

THE ANNUAL Halloween Cakewalk will be held Oct. 30 at the Franklin Museum in New Athens.

Activities, including walks, raffles and a concession stand, are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. with costume judging scheduled for 7 p.m.

The fund-raiser is sponsored by the New Athens Christmas Light Committee.

A CRAFT Show will be hosted Nov. 6 by the Moorefield Township Volunteer Fire Department at the Piedmont-based firehouse.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a lunch stand provided.
