EVELYN BYERS

Evelyn Weber Byers, age 100, passed away on July 23, 2021, at Wadsworth, OH.

Born January 23, 1921, in New Brighton, PA, she was the daughter of the late George and Gertrude (Graham) Weber.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Robert Lloyd Byers (1920-2001); brothers, George Weber (infant), James Weber (Pat) of Beaver Falls, and Thomas Weber (Ursula) of New Brighton; and sisters, Gertrude Rader (John) of New Brighton, Mary Jane Carbone (Peter) of La Habra, California, and Jeanne Murray (David) of Beaver, PA.

She is survived by her three children, Judith Versteeg of Amelia Island, FL, Karen Schrautemeier (Ray) of St. Louis, MO, and Robert Byers Jr., (Liz O’Grady) of Wadsworth, H. She leaves six grandchildren, Laurel Chacalos (John) of Wheeling, WV, Matthew Kinter of Bellaire, OH, Amanda Faircloth (Adam) of Arlington, VA, Emily Pignato (Matt) of Medina, OH, Katie Versteeg (Joe Serkosky) of Morristown, TN, and Julie Schrautemeier of St. Louis, MO; great-grandchildren, Lexi Chacalos, Megan Chacalos, Kelsey Chacalos, Cal Chacalos, Evelyn Pignato, Dominic Pignato, Grady Pignato, Caleb Faircloth, Betsy Faircloth, Adalyn Serkosky and Kami Schrautemeier. She is also survived by a sister, Lela Eckman (Ralph) of Beaver Falls; brother, William Weber of New Brighton; sister-in-law, Ursula Weber of Shelbyville, TN; and many nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was a 1938 graduate of New Brighton High School and a long-time member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. For three years she worked for the phone company and during World War II she worked in a defense plant making airplane propellers.

In her early years, Evelyn was President of the New Brighton Junior Women’s Club and President of the PTA. In 1964 she and her husband moved to Shadyside, OH, for his career and she became involved in the Bellaire City Hospital Auxiliary where she subsequently served as President.

She enjoyed writing and traveling and often wrote chronicles of her many domestic and international trips. For a while she worked as a staff writer for the Martins Ferry, OH, Times Leader Newspaper. She researched and wrote human interest stories from around the area and greatly loved this challenge.

Always the lady, Evelyn will be remembered by all for her sense of grace and propriety as she set this example for her family.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 27, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., at the J&J Spratt Funeral Home, 1612 3rd Ave, New Brighton, where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday, at 10 a.m., with entombment immediately following at Sylvania Hills Memorial Park, Rochester, PA.

Final arrangements are being handled by J & J Spratt Funeral Home, New Brighton.
