Laugh, cry or learn, courtesy of your newspaper

Every once in a while, something silly just tickles my funny bone. On Friday, it was Snoopy.

Each weekday, I check our comics page to make sure the correct strips, with the correct dates, will be found on that page the following day. While I was doing that Friday, I read the “Peanuts” comic strip and found myself laughing out loud.

On Friday, Charles Schulz’s classic cartoon featured a couple of frames in which Snoopy and Marcie were “mooing” at Peppermint Patty. It reminded me of the animated Christmas special in which Snoopy gets caught “booing” Charlie Brown, and I couldn’t help but burst out in giggles.

It’s not every day that the newspaper makes me laugh. Many times, the news articles we share — whether from the local level or at the state, national or world levels — make me want to cry or protest instead. Often, though, I find our reports — especially those about local residents — inspiring. But no matter whether I am reading “good news” or “bad news,” I always learn something new.

That is one of my favorite aspects of working for a newspaper. And it is an excellent reason for people to subscribe to their local newspaper and to share its contents with family and friends.

Newspapers remain, in my opinion, the best source for truly local news. Sure, sometimes we get scooped by our colleagues at area TV or radio stations. Maybe they beat us to some tidbit of information. But our reporters always manage to dig a little deeper, learn a little more and provide more complete insight into nearly every topic.

That is not all we do, though. We help families recognize birthdays, weddings, engagements and anniversaries, and to remember loved ones they have lost. We also provide a forum where readers can share their own opinions through letters to the editor. And, we let you know what our opinion is on a wide variety of issues as well.

As for sports coverage, our local newspapers are second to none. I’m not just talking about scores and game statistics. Our sports coverage includes all of that in addition to features about outstanding individuals, looks back at amazing seasons, news about which prep athletes have signed with college programs and information about community supporters of athletic programs.

We will keep doing all of that, and hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
