The first big crop of the season — grass

I’m sure every property owner in Eastern Ohio has noticed that grass-mowing season is upon us.

It’s a great sign that warmer, sunnier days are soon to come, but it’s also exhausting. At this time of year, when it seems the rain might never stop, the grass on our lawns — and the weeds around their perimeters — just soaks it all up, using the moisture as fuel to grow … and grow … and then grow some more.

We were all grateful to awake to some sunshine on Friday. The chill that had been in the air all week quickly melted away. And then the engines started. I think nearly every homeowner in Belmont fired up their push mower or tractor and set about getting their grass under control.

I was fortunate. I spent last weekend with my husband, Mike, mowing and trimming our lawn to a level of detail we had not achieved in seven or eight months. And, believe it or not, it still appeared to be well manicured a week later. I had a further stroke of luck, because my brother, Larry, had decided to mow another property of ours on Thursday.

So, I was able to kick back and enjoy the sounds of the outdoors and the neighbors’ lawn maintenance without worrying about how tall our grass had grown.

I suspect that many Belmont residents also had another motive for getting their mowing done. Saturday, May 6, is Community Yard Sale day in the village. I have seen several signs and social media posts throughout the week about families who will be opening up their lawns and garages to invite people to find some treasures among the items they no longer want or need.

We, too, had planned to hold a sale, but time got away from us and we just didn’t feel prepared. So, at the last minute Friday evening, we decided it would be better to reschedule and delay our sale until June, perhaps when the Centerville/Jacobsburg community sale day takes place, or maybe even during the much larger Route 40 yard sale.

Either way. I enjoyed Friday’s sunshine and warmer temperatures, and I am looking forward to an entire weekend that finally feels like spring.

Now to get ready for the community cleanup day that is scheduled for May 13. Surely I can find some unwanted items to contribute.
