The good things in life — and overdoing it
It is possible to have too much of a good thing.
My husband, Mike, and I try to make the most of our groceries, so we do our meal planning in a way that allows us to build off of the same ingredients for a variety of dishes over multiple days. That’s exactly what we did this past week, but apparently we ended up overdoing it.
My good friends know that I truly love tacos. I’m not quite sure what it is about them — it may be the crunchy shells combined with the spicy meat and cool, crisp toppings, or it could be the fact that you can make each and every one just a bit different from the one you had before — but I always enjoy eating tacos when the opportunity presents itself.
We had planned to have tacos for dinner last Sunday. We had such a big meal while we were out shopping, though, that we opted to just have a snack Sunday evening and save the tacos for Monday. As usual, I thoroughly enjoyed the meal when it came time to consume it.
Being the planners that we are, we already had some salad mix in the fridge, ready to make taco salads for dinner on Tuesday, using the leftover meat and toppings from Monday. Mike absolutely loved his salad that night, but we still had a few ingredients left over.
So, we went to the freezer and thawed some tilapia, planning to make fish tacos with slightly different toppings and sauce on Wednesday. That dinner turned out to be great as well, and I thought I couldn’t be doing much better than to have some form of tacos for dinner three nights in a row.
On Thursday morning, I changed my mind. Both Mike and I ended up with stomach aches. All of our ingredients had been fresh (with the exception of frozen fish), so we concluded that we had probably just consumed too much spicy, saucy food for too many days in a row. By Friday, we both felt just fine.
I share this story with you not because I think readers will rush out and make plans to eat tacos for days on end. Instead, it is a reminder that too much of anything can take a turn toward the negative.
Basking in the sunshine can feel glorious, for instance, but doing so for too long can lead to a sunburn. In fact, too much sun exposure can be dangerous, leading to skin cancer over the long term or to heat-related illnesses in the short term.
Another example comes in liquid form. Perhaps you enjoy a glass of fine wine or an imported beer every once in a while. Drinking too much of either one, however, can cause you to lower your inhibitions and do something silly or even dangerous. And chances are, you will feel lousy the next day.
There are many scenarios where one can get too much of a good thing, and parents should remember that during the summer break from school. Siblings should spend time together bonding, but being together day in and day out can begin to wear on brothers and sisters. They may have disagreements or even all-out fights if they don’t get an occasional break from each other’s company.
So remember that variety is the spice of life. Change up your routine and that of your family from time to time. Try something new. Meet some new people. Or go on a trip to a favorite spot you haven’t visited in a while.
Summer is the time to seize the day, so make sure you do just that.
