Summer concert season winds down with Willie
It’s been said that age is just a number.
If you want evidence of that, look no further than the timeless Willie Nelson.
As readers who regularly follow this column will know, my husband, Mike, and I often attend concerts as our form of getting away from it all. We did so again on Thursday, and the evening did not disappoint.
For me, the main attraction was good old Willie.
I believe it was 1992 when I saw Nelson play at Jamboree In The Hills. Although I was never a huge country music fan, something about those classic songs delivered in the way that only Willie Nelson can made that a favorite show for me. Now, three decades later, Nelson took the stage at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and laid down the same magical vocals — even though he is now 91 years old!
For Mike, another performer was his motivation for attending. Bob Dylan, at age 83, preceded Nelson on the stage. He, too, played some of his classic hits and pleased the enormous crowd, but for me it just wasn’t the same as watching Willie.
A surprise for me, because I don’t really follow concert tour news or deal with buying our tickets, was that John Mellencamp was also among the lineup. Better Known as “John Cougar” or “John Cougar Mellencamp” during his heyday, he also put on a great performance. By far the youngest of the three at age 72, he appeared in his signature coveralls and laid down the “heartland rock” songs that gained him fame. From “Jack & Diane” to “Hurts So Good,” Small Town,” “Crumblin Down” and “Pink Houses,” I believe I (and everyone else in the audience) knew just about every word.
It will be our last concert of this summer season, and I am oh so glad we went. After all, you never know when the last time you saw an act perform live will be the last time you ever get to see them.
And when the entire production is so satisfying and well done, it makes the price of admission worth it.
Another performance of their Outlaw Music Festival takes place this weekend on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Pavilion at Star Lake. If you are a fan of any of the acts I mentioned, get yourself some tickets and go.
Our experience on Thursday tells me that you won’t be disappointed either.
