Appreciating all that our region has to offer

Announcements about upcoming activities and events have gotten me thinking about some of my favorite things to see and do right here in Eastern Ohio.

Specifically, the Captina Conservancy’s monthly hikes in Dysart Woods brought back some childhood memories. Like many people who grew up here, I visited the woods with Scout groups and 4-H clubs back in the day.

But I also spent time there because my family and the Bartels family who lived there are served as caretakers were friends. My dad often took me there in the fall as well to hunt for nuts and hedge apples.

Barkcamp is another great place to hike — and fish, or boat, or camp at this time of year.

And what about Ravens Rocks near Beallsville? Have you ever visited that natural wonder? I have, and I always find myself in awe of the deep ravine and the flora and fauna that help make it special.

There is also the beautiful view available at Georgetown Winery in Cambridge, where you can enjoy a beverage or dine on pizza while gazing across the vineyard and down on the city.

We also have some amazing historical sites to visit, such as Walnut Grove Cemetery in Martins Ferry, where headstones date back centuries and mark the graves of pivotal fal regional figures such as Betty Zane, the heroine of Ft. Henry.

Others include the Great Stone Viaduct in Bellaire, the Grave Creek Mound in Moundsville, the Victorian Mansion Museum in Barnesville and the Oglebay Mansion in Wheeling.

What are some of your favorite local spots?

And when will you make the time to enjoy them?
