Is the grass greener? You bet it is, and then some
Apparently, the grass in Belmont has completely recovered from last year’s drought.
Nobody was happier than I was to see the grass everywhere turn green again this spring.
The dry, brown, straw-like stuff that covered lawns across the region by last fall was pretty concerning. Not only was it not very attractive, but I wasn’t sure it wouldn’t die off completely.
But a fairly wet winter followed by spring storms brought it — and just about every other type of flower, weed and foliage — bouncing back.
Already, we have fallen behind on our mowing. Yes, we have definitely mowed and trimmed our property very thoroughly, but the effect didn’t last long. As the rain fell, the dandelions grew, instantly leaving the yard looking shaggy. And it wasn’t long before the grass itself caught up, growing thick and wild in many spots rather than producing a nice, even growth pattern.
It’s not that I mind cutting the grass; in fact, I rather enjoy that chore. I love the smell of fresh-cut grass, even if I do need allergy medication to enjoy it.
The trouble is that when the rain comes so often, we don’t get the opportunity to mow. And the taller the grass gets, the more moisture it retains, making us wait even longer to get the chance to crop it.
All last week, I looked forward to having time this weekend to mow the lawn and trim the edges to get things looking sharp again. Then, on Friday, I saw the forecast and realized it isn’t likely to happen.
Once the weekend passes and I get back to work on Monday, it will be too late. I never seem to make time on a weekday to complete those tasks. So, it seems likely that another week will go by before I actually break out the tractor or the push mower and get that growth under control.
However, I will gladly take some slightly overgrown grass over the crispy, burnt stuff that covered our lawn by the end of last summer. The grass is definitely greener on this side of the drought, and I am going to enjoy it even if I can’t quite keep it under control.
