What about our grandchildren’s future?

CJ is our oldest grandchild. He was born when I was only in my 30s. Many of my friends were still having children of their own and I was a “grandfather.” I didn’t like the word because I remember my grandparents, sitting in a rocking chair, shuffling with a cane, resting from their labors and waiting to die. I wasn’t ready for that, but I loved CJ and being a grandparent. You get to enjoy your grandchildren and have fun with them without the responsibilities of being a parent. I even played with CJ on his adult soccer team in a game before my injury. Lynnda and I took CJ on ...

How football shaped the father of Mother’s Day

“My mother is someone who shows me how to live,” said Cathy Daigle, Grade 4, St. Joseph’s School, Maine. Say “mother,” “mom,” “momma” to a roomful of people and you’re likely to call forth a roomful of images. She may choose a full-time career outside the home, one inside the home, or some combination of each. She may be a natural mother, or an adoptive mother, a stepmother, or a foster mother. However she gained the title and however she expresses ...

Happy Mother’s Day, Eastern Ohio! It is still hard for me to believe, but it has been almost seven years since my mother, Grace Compston, died. Mother’s Day has been difficult for me after that, but it gets a little easier every year. Looking back now, I am not stricken with sadness each time I think about her. These days, my memories of her are far more apt to make me smile or laugh than cry. Mom was one impressive lady. She overcame physical ailments and injuries many times, and absolutely nothing could stop her from achieving something if she set her mind to it. People often ...

United States is still a beacon of hope for the world

A few years ago, we were in New York City for the National Speakers Association’s annual convention. It was my first time in NYC. I was fascinated by the tall buildings and couldn’t help looking up at the skyscrapers. We had a free evening and were going to do some site seeing. Kay, part of our group from the Ohio Chapter, was our leader. She knew her way around NYC having worked there for several years as a stand-up comic before returning to Columbus. She warned us, “Don’t look up!” “Is it bad for our neck?” “No.” Kay responded, “They’ll think you’re a ...
