School Progerss

Few things are more important in the lives of our youth than an opportunity to achieve academic success. Being able to excel in the classroom is the first big step toward finding a successful path in life.

It can be a challenging road in this day and age. Fallout from a struggling economy can trickle down to make the struggle that much harder – even for students in our public schools, which may find themselves without many of the resources they once had during more fruitful times.

But the resilience of our educators and hard work by students and parents pay off.

Such is the case in the Bellaire Local School District, where this week the board of education took time out to recognize its staff, administrators, parents and students for their hard work over the past few years.

The Bellaire Local School District had been placed on academic watch just a few years ago. Any school district with this state designation is in a tough spot, with all eyes from the Ohio Department of Education to parents of the students in the district fixed on the school system.

Through hard work and dedication over the past few years, the Bellaire schools were able to improve their annual progress reports and improve their academic rating. Ohio School District Report Cards for the 2009-10 school year designated Bellaire as an excellent school district, an achievement that deserves applause.

Other school districts in the area have faced similar challenges in recent years. And those that have already been rated as excellent have to work just as hard to maintain that status.

We applaud all of our local educators who are dedicated to providing the best possible education for our students, despite the many challenges that face them each and every school year. We also encourage students and parents to do their part to help keep our local schools’ academic ratings at the top of the ranks among all the other schools in the state. That means working hard both in the classroom and at home, as well as being involved in school activities and playing a key role in the success of their school districts.

There’s no better way to invest in the future of our young people and our area’s future.
