Increased Safety

YOU CANNOT put a price tag on safety.

That is why we agree with the thinking of the Martins Ferry Volunteer Fire Department and its fire chief, Ed Duke.

Duke addressed Martins Ferry City Council Thursday night. He delivered a proposal we are solidly in line with.

Duke and his department’s plan would result in a safer Martins Ferry. That makes it a plan city leaders should embrace.

The fire chief noted to Martins Ferry council members that a great deal of commercial property is far from meeting fire code and a major catastrophe is just waiting to happen. He pointed out that a recent fire in the business district would have “taken out half a block,” if not for such a timely response by Ferry firefighters.

Looking to avert possible tragedy in the future, Duke is seeking council approval to allow the fire department to conduct yearly fire safety inspections of commercial buildings within the city. Several Ferry VFD members have the proper and mandated state certification to conduct such inspections.

Such fire-preventing testing will result in enhanced safety for businesses, citizens and firefighters while in the line of duty.

We understand safety inspections may lead to some added expenditures for businesses in becoming more fire resistant. But it would obviously be money well spent.

It is safe to say that Duke and his firefighters have touched on an idea that will spark much discussion amongst the city administration. We hope that city council gives the proposal its blessing.
