Making a Splash

COMMUNITY SWIMMING pools are drying up in Eastern Ohio.

Bellaire has made a softball field out of its former municipal pool. It once was the social hub of the summer season in the All-American Town. But costly repairs doomed its fate.

Just to the south, Shadyside was unable to open its village pool last summer do to a lack of funding. Community pools are costly to operate, even if major repairs are not necessary.

Such is a sad scenario. People, especially youths, often say, “there is nothing to do in the Ohio Valley.” Not having a pool in your hometown only magnifies that problem.

That is why we are proud of the village of Shadyside. An outpouring of support from government and citizens alike at Monday’s council meeting gave hope that the Tiger Town will open its pool this summer.

Much work remains, however, for that to come to fruition. But it appears that the community is unified and committed to making that happen.

Money remains the key issue. But again teamwork and vision may likely prove a success in remedying the problem.

The Mead Township Park District has no jurisdiction with the pool. The board, however, is stepping up and donating $5,000 once it is determined the pool will offically open. We commend park district officials for a notable gesture.

That still leaves much fundraising to be done, which will fall into the hands of the eventual pool patrons. The village plans to raise enough money to open the pool by selling family passes, at a cost of $75. Village officials say if 130 can be sold, sufficient funding will be realized to make the pool a reality this summer.

We see that as a workable and equitable plan. The price is family friendly while 130 passes is an attainable number as there is no geographical boundary. Individuals from any community can purchase a pass.

Shadyside officials earn our praise for being proactive with attempts to open the village pool. We urge Shadyside residents, as well as those in surrounding communities, to get behind a worthwhile effort.
