Youthful Vision
WISE BEYOND his years.
A Bellaire Middle School student obviously cares about his school district. Even better yet, he is willing to take a lead role in raising money to help the cash-strapped school system dig out of its $3 million hole.
Taylor Price is a seventh-grader. Taylor is a very enterprising seventh-grader.
He is also committed on graduating from Bellaire High School, which is not currently guaranteed due to the district’s current final plight. Taylor, after hearing a presentation from Superintendent Tony Scott, got the ball rolling on a series of fundraisers that his classmates could help stage to raise money for the district.
The students enlisted the help of several teachers which led to a brainstorming meeting to toss around potential ideas. There was no lack of money-making proposals.
The development of such plans is refreshing. More refreshing is where those ideas were generated from — young people. With all the bad news we hear these days about youths, it is heartwarming to see something so worthwhile emanating from the middle-school level.
The ideas included a bake sale, tag day, car wash, lemonade stand and t-shirt sales. While the proposals were anything but novel, those suggesting them were.
Engineering such a project speaks volumes of the character of these young Big Reds. Their actions personify ingenuity, school spirit, community pride and commitment.
The money these resourceful youths eventually raise is only a minute portion of what is needed for the district to escape red ink. But their selfless undertaking is a reflection of a school district rich in quality students.
