Special Unit

EASTERN OHIO streets have gotten much cleaner the past few days. Not from the removal of dirt or litter, but rather drugs and those suspected of trafficking them.

A host of drug busts were staged late last week. They were conducted at various sections of Belmont County.

As a result, large amounts of drugs were confiscated as well as thousands of dollars. It was a large haul to say the least.

Once again leading the way was the Belmont County Drug Task Force. The passionate group of local drug-busters has turned in yeoman’s duty over the last year or longer.

The task force is spearheaded by its commander, John McFarland. He is also the chief of the Martins Ferry Police Department.

McFarland’s crew is composed of officers from several local law enforcement agencies. They donate their time and expertise for a most noteworthy cause — putting a dent in the rampant drug problem that haunts our local communities.

The task force does its duties superbly. In return, it receives little fanfare and no compensation. Task force members are doing it all for the right reasons, busting up the drug trade.

The Belmont County Drug Task Force has made countless arrests, resulting in countless convictions. It is making a huge and positive difference in keeping illegal drugs out of the hands of our youth.

We tip our cap to McFarland and his task force for their dogged determination in getting drugs and traffickers out of circulation. Eastern Ohioans owe the task force a debt of gratitude.
