Betty Zane Days

SCHOOL BELLS will be ringing in the very near future for Eastern Ohio students, some as early as next week. The resumption of classes signals the end of the summer season.

That being the case, an ideal family-oriented way to wind down the season unfolds in Martins Ferry this week. The annual Betty Zane Days Festival officially begins today, and with it comes a wide variety of activities and entertainment for individuals of all ages.

The annual event is under the auspices of the Martins Ferry Volunteer Fire Department. The VFD plans meticulously for the festival, looking to provide all types of attractions.

The Purple City event features plenty of great food, lively entertainment and a plethora of rides and games.

The festival will also feature its annual 5K race Wednesday. The race takes on added significance this year as it will benefit the Martins Ferry High School National Honor Society and the Martins Ferry Athletic Department.

The race begins at 6 p.m for runners and 6:05 for walkers. It starts and finishes at the city park. We encourage all those physically able to lace up their shoes and take part.

Another major attraction is the dunk tank sponsored by the Martins Ferry Lions Club on Friday and Saturday. The lineup features Belmont County officials and Martins Ferry School District employees.

The festival runs through Saturday, with many organizations benefiting.

We commend the Martins Ferry VFD for staging a first-class festival, and we urge local residents to support a worthwhile event.
