Support kids and the arts

Auditoriums in our area’s schools have come to life once again, as the region’s high school schools and colleges are presenting their annual spring productions.

The performances offer a great opportunity for relatives, friends and area residents to support work being done in our local school districts while enjoying the talents of area students.

This year’s schedule included a wide array of titles, including “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” “Forever Plaid,” “Our Town,” “The Edgar Allan Poe Afterlife Radio Show” and “Sense and Sensibility.”

While nearly all of the 2020 presentations had to be canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s productions are back on stages. And, even though ticket sales might be limited, many offer the chance to see the performances online.

Each of these productions represents the culmination of months and months of hard work and sweat from students who learned lines and songs, as well as dance routines.

The shows represent the patience and hard work of the teachers and directors, and of support staff including students and parents and other teachers who get the stages ready and the sets prepared and make sure the costumes are just so.

It’s a chance to laugh, to ponder and to simply enjoy a variety of talent that can be found in our area schools. If you doubt that today’s young are capable of much beyond video games, erase those doubts by attending or viewing one of these productions.

You’ll see talent on display from young people dedicated enough to have put in the time it takes to perform in a production.

It is a credit to these schools, these instructors and, especially, these students.

Money raised from the productions also is important, because those dollars help to keep the fine arts programs alive at the schools. If you were not able to attend a presentation in person, remember that you can always make a donation to the school and its theater program.

By continuing to support the fine arts programs in our area’s school, you will help ensure the lights will always be able to come up and applause will continue to rise as aspiring actors take to area stages for many years to come.
