Providing closure

No one knows yet exactly what happened to Brian Goff and Joni Davis on June 10, 2018, but their families are finally getting some closure.

Despite the fact that the couple had been missing for more than three years, local law enforcement had not given up the search for them. Then, on Nov. 11, a new resource became available.

Chaos Divers, an Illinois-based underwater recovery team, was in the area searching for another person missing since 2007. Since they were nearby, they joined the effort to locate Goff and Davis, which had been focused on the Rayland area for some time.

Using sonar, Chaos Divers soon found a vehicle submerged in the Ohio River. When they dove at the site, they found the bodies of Goff, 64, and Davis, 55, inside Goff’s light blue 1990 Oldsmobile Delta 88. Jacob Grubbs of Chaos Divers said such work is sad but fulfilling.

“It’s an honor to work for the families and try to bring lost loved ones home,” Grubbs said.

Martins Ferry residents Davis and Goff had last been seen leaving Pizza Hut on National Road in St. Clairsville. Goff was Davis’ caregiver. Davis previously had suffered a traumatic brain injury. The last “ping” from their cellphone occurred near Rayland.

The investigation into their deaths continues. Autopsies and forensic work are being conducted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

We commend the Belmont and Jefferson county sheriff’s departments for refusing ti give up on this challenging case. And we thank Chaos Divers for helping bring it one step closer to its conclusion.

May the families of Goff and Davis find comfort in finally knowing where their loved ones are.
