Another disappointment

Residents of Appalachian Ohio can sympathize with Toledo-area residents who got news last week that Peloton will not be keeping its promises to the area or the state.

It’s a story we know here all too well. Big company makes big announcement, local officials start singing “We’re in the Money,” we wait … and then disappointment.

What is unusual about Peloton’s abandonment of the Buckeye State is that it had already begun work on what was to be its first U.S. factory.

Production was supposed to start next year. That building was supposed to be a place where it could show off its products.

The facility was to employ 2,000. There was a lot of hope attached to the project.

But now those hopes are dashed as Peloton announced it is not only dropping the Toledo project, it is cutting 2,800 jobs in the U.S., and its chief executive is stepping down.

Just about the only positive came from J.P. Nauseef, president of JobsOhio, who said Peloton’s now-prepared site should be attractive for future development.

He’s right. That should be a draw to the next major employer who sees potential in Ohio.

In the meantime, officials will have to get back to the work of attracting that next major employer. Let’s hope those who already have committed to Ohio will keep their word.

Disappointments are nothing new — and we’ve certainly had our share. But Buckeye State residents are resilient and will be ready to get the job done.
