Making it happen in Ohio

When one thinks of the world’s largest chip-making complex — a $100 billion investment by Intel Corp. — it is unlikely the location to come to mind is New Albany, Ohio.

But according to Intel Chief Executive Officer Pat Gelsinger, it is just the spot for tackling global chip shortages.

As U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo pointed out late last month, the electronics manufacturing supply chain is “far too dependent on conditions and countries halfway around the world.”

Intel’s move is an effort to combat that on more than just a temporary basis.

Of course the complex won’t pop up overnight, but once it is built, it will make a big difference.

And the place to make that difference is right here in Ohio.

We have the sites, the workforce, the education institutions and the work ethic.

Though our manufacturing past was on a larger scale, Intel was right to understand we have the skills to build things — even small things. The people of Ohio have a long, successful history of making everything from steel beams and aluminum products to complete automobiles.

In addition, as pointed out in a report by Reuters, Intel’s confidence means others will likely join in.

Partners and suppliers such as Air Products, Applied Materials, LAM Research and Ultra Clean Technology have shown interest in establishing a presence in the region.

As we celebrate the news from Intel, lawmakers should be working to help other businesses understand they, too, will find what they need here.
