Move over for workers

Though drivers may be hoping the warm weather Monday means we won’t need to see snow plows and salt trucks on the roads again until next winter, the Ohio Department of Transportation has a reminder for drivers:

If you are approaching a snow plow, salt truck, work crew, law enforcement, emergency vehicle or any other vehicle with flashing lights on or at the side of the road, it’s the law to move over.

So far this season, ODOT has reported an astounding 31 snow plow strikes across the state.

There were 46 all of last winter.

“You’ve got to keep in mind now our snow seasons last sometimes into March or early April for some parts of the state, so already being up to 31 is really significant,” ODOT spokeswoman Kelsie Hoagland said. “The message is please give our plows the room to work. You know, this is their job. We’re just trying to make the roads safer for everybody to get around, but we do need that assistance from motorists to give us space to work and be able to complete our jobs.”

ODOT’s reminder came after a pothole patching crew on U.S. 35 in Fayette County was struck by a semi truck earlier this month.

We’ve got to share the roadways. That means when we are safely able to move over and give as much space as possible to those who are vulnerable — often because they are serving us — we should do so.

Otherwise, one wrong move could do a lot of damage, and maybe even be deadly.
