Military record clear

Stolen valor is the term for those who have made fraudulent claims about military service. It is a federal crime if those fraudulent claims were used “with intent to obtain money, property, or other tangible benefit,” if that person falsely claimed to have been a recipient of one of the many honors given for brave and honorable service.

While one could certainly argue that being elected to public office would count as a tangible benefit, J.R. Majewski has not, as far as we know, claimed to have received any of those honors.

He has, on the other hand, misrepresented his military service, according to public records obtained by the Associated Press.

Majewski, a Republican running for an Ohio congressional seat, said he was an Air Force combat veteran who deployed to Afghanistan after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Documents show not only did Majewski never serve time in Afghanistan, but that he actually served a six-month stint helping to load planes in Qatar — safely away from any fighting.

Every military veteran should be proud of their service to our nation. But claiming a military record that is inaccurate is more than a disservice to fellow vets.

It is a disgusting lie the people of Ohio’s 9th Congressional District will no doubt reject.
