Safety pays off in Ohio

Ohio employers have good reason to be pleased with changes announced out of the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, where the board of directors has approved an 8% rate reduction for workers’ comp premiums for private employers.

According to an announcement by BWC Administrator John Logue, that means the Buckeye State’s private employers could pay $90 million less in the next fiscal year.

In fact, the BWC reports average rate levels for public and private employers in the state are at their lowest level in 60 years.

It must have been tempting for bureaucrats and elected officials to take credit for such a change.

But instead, Gov. Mike DeWine placed the credit where it belongs — with businesses adopting a safety-focused culture.

Lawmakers and other public officials have made great strides in recent years to make Ohio a better place to work. Logue is correct when he says that combination of smart, responsible — and, hence, safe — workers and lower rates for employers does put Ohio in a “strong economic position.”

Employers and workers surely will do their part to keep it that way. Let us hope King Bureaucracy does the same.
