It's always wonderful to see our community pull together to help those in need. The Wolfpack 11U soccer team from St. Clairsville is one such example.
The team, under the leadership of head coach and St. Clairsville soccer great Jaclyn (Dutton) Ketter, raised $1,800 for Woodsfield resident Angie Dougherty, who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer -- inflammatory HER2 positive.
She currently is in Stage 3. She has received a course of chemotherapy and is undergoing radiation treatments. The money the team raised will go to help defray the cost of her medical treatments.
The girls involved hail from communities across the region. A few are homeschooled, while others attend classes at Union Local, Bridgeport, Bellaire, Martins Ferry, St. Clairsville and St. Mary in Martins Ferry.
"We wanted to teach the girls about more than just soccer," Ketter said. "We wanted to teach them some life lessons, and I couldn't think of any better way than breast cancer. It's affected some people in my life, and I'm sure it has affected some of the girls on the team."
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so this effort is not just admirable but also quite timely.
This is such a great way to set an example for youngsters on how to serve others. Ketter and her husband, assistant coach Scott Ketter, and the entire team and their parents deserve credit for finding a way to really help someone in need.
