Today is Election Day — a day when we, as American citizens, have important work to do.
Two statewide issues will be decided, determining the future of abortion and other reproductive rights and marijuana use in Ohio. But there are also dozens of local races for municipal and township offices as well as numerous tax questions to consider.
Ohio Issue 1, “The Right to Reproductive Freedom with Protections for Health and Safety,” would amend the state constitution to allow individuals to choose their own reproductive medical treatments, including decisions on abortion, contraception, fertility treatment, miscarriage care and continuing pregnancy.
Ohio Issue 2, the Marijuana Legalization Initiative, would legalize recreational marijuana use for people 21 and older. It would create a new Division of Cannabis Control to regulate the industry.
Meanwhile, St. Clairsville voters will see a three-way race for mayor with incumbent Kathryn Thalman running against resident William Brooks and Councilwoman Linda Jordan. Mayors also will be elected in Bethesda and Holloway.
Communities across Belmont, Harrison and Monroe counties will elect new council members, school board members and township trustees and fiscal officers.
A 1% income tax increase for general operations is on the ballot in Martins Ferry. The Union Local School District is seeking a 8-25-mill levy for renovations, additions and improvements to its buildings, constructing an athletic complex with fieldhouse and more. It would generate $62,820,000 to be repaid over 37 years.
These are all important races and issues that will actually impact our daily lives here in the Ohio Valley.
Polling locations will be open 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. today. Make sure you take photo identification and get out and fulfill your responsibility to your community and your country. Get out and vote!
