Time to stop the hate

“This is not the first time Beachwood student-athletes have been subjected to antisemitic and racist speech. We always hope it will be the last.”

Those words from Superintendent Robert Hardis, who leads the approximately 90% Jewish Beachwood School District in Ohio, are a heartbreaking response to the behavior of Brooklyn (Ohio) High School football players who earlier this season allegedly used the word “Nazi” to call plays during a game against Beachwood.

Brooklyn head coach Tim McFarland did the right thing by stepping down in the wake of that disturbing and inappropriate incident. High school players should exhibit respect and good sportsmanship toward their opponents, and it is a coach’s responsibility to help teach them those lessons along with the play book.

Tel Aviv University’s Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry and the U.S.-based Anti-Defamation League conducted a study that showed antisemitism is increasing significantly in the U.S. Evidence of that is found in the anti-Jewish hate crimes and harassment reported nationwide. And the slaughter of thousands of innocents in Israel by Hamas, and that nation’s appropriate response, has led to a new wave of antisemitism here at home.

Brooklyn High students will receive training on the issue. That’s as it should be. There’s no excuse for continued hate.
