Though the Republican National Committee’s online platform summary does now contain TWO references to “America’s greatness” and what “makes America great,” it is conspicuously lacking a tenet many political conservatives still hold dear: When it comes to government, less is more; and decisions should be made as locally as possible.

Perhaps it is no surprise then that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s takeover of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District stinks of government power-grab and tyranny. According to a lawsuit filed by Disney, the DeSantis-controlled CFTOD has failed to properly preserve records or release public documents to the entities being governed. According to Disney, it has been seven months since it paid more than $2,400 to get emails and text messages belonging to the five district board members appointed by DeSantis.

“CFTOD has prevented Disney from discovering the actions of its government through public records requests, in violation of Florida law,” said the lawsuit filed in state court in Orlando.

According to the lawsuit, DeSantis-appointed board members are allowed to use personal email addresses and texts for district business with no process to ensure they are preserved or to make sure members don’t delete messages dealing with district business.

One would assume proper protocol in private emails would be a no-brainer for this bunch. Recall that this takeover was retaliation on DeSantis’s part, because a small district government publicly disagreed with him.

None of that sounds like “America’s greatness,” does it? It sounds like big, opaque, power-hungry government failing to obey its own laws. That is, truly, a shame.
