Fix mapmaking process
If you are as horrified by the redistricting process in Ohio as are those who organized Citizens Not Politicians, you have another chance to add your name to the list of those who are seeking change.
Now that the group’s proposal to change the political mapmaking system in the Buckeye State has cleared another round of hurdles, Citizens Not Politicians has until July 3 to collect 414,000 signatures. The aim is to put a constitutional amendment on the November 2024 ballot to replace the Ohio Redistricting Commission. Their proposal is to put in place a new group made up of three statewide officeholders and four state lawmakers, with an independent body selected directly by citizens.
Remember, the Ohio Redistricting Commission has repeatedly failed to draw fair and constitutional political maps. Therefore, it has repeatedly failed Ohioans.
Even Gov. Mike DeWine says the system in place “doesn’t work very well,” and that political maps should not be decided by politicians. To be fair, he also said he was not certain the proposal from Citizens Not Politicians is the right answer.
Certainly, something has got to change. The Ohio Redistricting Commission has managed to produce two congressional maps and five sets of Statehouse maps that were rejected in court.
Read the Citizens Not Politicians proposal and decide whether you believe it is worth putting up for a vote.
