A pass to see history

As our country approaches its semiquincentennial, the America 250-Ohio commission has come up with a fantastic idea for getting young people interested in our state’s (and, let’s face it, therefore our country’s) history. With the 4th Grade History Pass, fourth-graders across the state will have the chance to visit history-related museums and sites for free, if accompanied by a paying adult.

“We believe that this opportunity will inspire fourth grade students to explore and appreciate Ohio’s history, fostering a sense of pride and connection to their roots,” said Todd Kleismit, executive director of America 250-Ohio. “We hope this program brings enthusiasm to many families and students who are interested in learning more about Ohio’s contributions to the nation’s history for 250+ years.”

So far there are nearly 20 sites on the list of institutions for which the 4th Grade History Pass will apply, and Flushing’s own Underground Railroad Museum is among them. So is historic Fort Steuben in Steubenville.

Of course, it is essential that fourth-graders who are just being introduced to the early stages of Ohio’s and the United States’ development understand the whole story — the good, the bad and the ugly — that has gotten us to where we are today. Spending time outside the classroom and in some of our wonderful museums will give them an even better chance to do that.

“We are incredibly thankful to our history-related museums and site partners for opening their doors and participating in this important initiative,” said Doug Preisse, America 250-Ohio Commission co-chair. “Through this program, we aim to teach young minds that history is not a lesson on the past, but a guiding force for the future.”

It is a good opportunity not just for the students, but for those accompanying adults who might learn a thing or two as well.

Take advantage of this chance to learn from what we’ve been, and how we can use the knowledge of that history to propel us into a bright future.
