A clean home is a safer home

Spring has sprung, and for many that means an excuse to do a little spring cleaning. The Ohio Fire Marshal suggests that cleanup should be done with fire safety in mind, too.

“A clutter-free home is a safer home when it comes to fire risks. That’s why it’s so important for Ohioans to take a few extra moments during spring cleaning to inspect their homes for potential fire hazards,” said Ohio Department of Commerce Division of State Fire Marshal Kevin Reardon.

Buckeye State residents — everyone, really — should heed Reardon’s advice. By decluttering — making sure hallways and doors are accessible and clear, and making sure all items are stored at least three feet away from furnaces and hot water heaters — you make your home safer for yourself and first responders.

It’s also a good time to clear outdoor debris that could catch fire if an ember was to blow onto your property.

And use the occasion to make your rounds to items such as your clothes dryer (is the ventilation pipe clear and unrestricted? Are there flammable items such as boxes or cleaning supplies too close to the dryer?), your grill and your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Look for any frayed or otherwise damaged electrical cords. Make sure gasoline and other fuels are properly stored.

It’s a lot to think about, but it is well worth the extra time. Adding these steps to your spring cleaning routine could keep you, your family and first responders safer. It could save your home or even a life.
