Don’t risk causing a fire

While the weather may make it a little easier to spend time outside, Ohioans tempted to use the opportunity to fire up the burn pile and get rid of some yard waste might want to take a look at the rules for doing so.

According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry, most open burning in unincorporated areas is prohibited in March, April, May, October and November between the hours of 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Burn risk is higher when the weather is windier and vegetation is not yet green (or, in the fall, when it is losing its green again).

Pay attention to the weather — and have the right tools on hand, in addition to access to water, to put out a fire.

Never leaving burning debris unattended.

Better yet, consider some alternatives to burning, such as composting.

Irresponsible burning can lead to dangerous — maybe even deadly — wildfires. And while those who fight such fires in the Buckeye State are willing to take the risk that comes with trying to protect our lives and property from such recklessness, they should never have to.

“Individuals may be held liable for damages caused as a result of a fire that they kindle,” according to the Division of Forestry. But it shouldn’t take more than knowing the risks to convince people to follow the rules.

The approaching spring is something to which nearly everyone looks forward. Be smart, follow the law, and make sure that anticipation of brighter days ahead does not go up in flames.
