Preparing for storms

No one can predict the future, but the scientists who work for the National Weather Service can, to a large degree, predict how weather conditions will unfold.

That is why everyone should pay attention when they issue watches, warnings and advisories. Today is a day when that is likely to happen.

The NWS issued a statement Monday placing the local region at “moderate risk” for severe weather today. In addition to repeated heavy rainfall that is expected to cause flooding, forecasters anticipate that storms striking our area will bring damaging winds with gusts exceeding 78 mph, large hail and the development of tornadoes.

Those are dangerous, potentially deadly conditions. To protect ourselves from such destructive weather, we must be prepared and have a plan regarding what we will do if it does materialize.

Those living near streams in our local valleys should keep an eye on the water level and evacuate to higher ground if they rise out of their banks near homes or businesses. People driving on area roads should remember to never drive through high water, since only a few inches of a fast-moving current can sweep a vehicle away.

If a tornado warning is issued for your location, don’t wait to take action. Find shelter indoors, away from windows. If a storm cellar or basement is available, get underground. Otherwise, move to the center of a sturdy building and find ways to shield yourself against flying debris. This can include getting inside a smaller room or closet and covering your body with coats, blankets, helmets or whatever is available.

We can hope for sunny skies but still know what to do to remain safe when storms arrive instead.
