When is it our turn?

Politicians are excellent at using language to improve voters’ opinion of them.

It’s an art. It’s why we see new numbers pop up, such as when the offices of Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Lt. Gov. Jon Husted announce not only that a new set of projects will create 707 new jobs, but that it will RETAIN 1,614 jobs.

Further, the nine projects reviewed by the Ohio Tax Credit Authority after being presented by JobsOhio are EXPECTED to result in more than $44 million in new payroll and “spur more than $217 million in investment across Ohio.”

Those nine projects may well be boons for their communities. For example, the TCA approved a 1.481%, eight-year Job Creation Tax credit for Goyette Mechanical Company Inc.’s expansion of Ohio operations. That is expected to create 90 full-time jobs in Franklin County.

Wonderful.

But that bit about “investment across Ohio” rings hollow when the announcement includes credits for projects in the Central, Northeast and Southwest regions, but once again Southeast Ohio might as well be on another planet.

Residents of Appalachian Ohio are waiting a little less patiently for those large employers within commuting distance and significant investments that will bring us the prosperity we are told is building all over the Buckeye State.

Yes, there are some targeted efforts causing booms elsewhere.

We can’t help but ask state officials: When is it our turn?
