As Ohio works to reinvent itself as the tech capital of the Midwest, officials understand there are many Ohioans who need nothing but a little education and training to be part of our evolving workforce.

To their credit, the Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation set out to help with its TechCred program. Since 2019 the program has awarded more than 100,000 credentials.

“This milestone is a celebration of the hardworking Ohioans who have dedicated time and effort to learning new skills and earning the tech-focused credentials necessary to support Ohio’s economy well into the future,” said Lydia Mihalik, director of the Ohio Department of Development.

Buckeye State employers are able to fill workforce needs by “upskilling” current and prospective employees with the help of TechCred funding — up to $30,000 per round and up to $180,000 per year. The current application period ends July 31, at techcred.ohio.gov.

So far, industries such as manufacturing, construction and education services have all seen benefits of the program. But there is more to accomplish.

Don’t hesitate to think creatively about what your business — and your employees — could do.

And don’t give up hope that some of the jobs and partnerships we’ve been promised from large employers within commuting distance are JUST around the corner.
