WANTED: More volunteers

Here in Eastern Ohio, we don’t hesitate to express our admiration and appreciation for our first responders.

Whenever firefighters and emergency medical personnel respond to an accident, fire or other emergency, we are quick to thank them for their service. On occasion, area residents stop by their headquarters with trays of cookies or pizza.

Many of us attend the fundraisers they work hard to put on and enjoy ourselves while we are at it. More often than not, we even vote in favor of the property tax levies they need to fund their operations.

But do we really provide the support they need from us?

Over the past week or so, there have been three great examples of just how important these individuals are to the rest of us. On Jan. 17, a man fishing on a Barnesville reservoir fell through the ice. He was able to hang on and tread water for an incredible 45 minutes. In the end, the Barnesville Fire Department, working with other agencies and resident Lance Fisher, was able to rescue him from the frigid water.

Then, in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, three houses in Martins Ferry caught fire. Crews from the city and surrounding communities spent the night in subzero temperatures battling the flames. The people living in those homes all escaped safely.

Flames broke out again on Wednesday during a home renovation project between Bethesda and Barnesville. Once again, local firefighters doused the blaze, saving the structure from extensive damage and ensuring everyone was safe.

So, what kind of support do they need to continue this vital work?

In most cases, they need more volunteers. Local departments constantly appeal to the public for new members. Unfortunately, few new people join their ranks.

So, if you are able, consider becoming a volunteer. If you are not, consider who you know who might be able and encourage them to give it some thought.
