Holiday Partnership Spans State Lines
When a community invests in the arts, it invests in its future. That truth sits at the heart of Oglebay Institute’s decision to take its annual Nutcracker performance on the road — and in doing so, extend a holiday tradition to families across the Ohio Valley.
This year, Oglebay Institute’s School of Dance will perform The Nutcracker at the new Unified Bank Jr. Recreation Center in St. Clairsville. It is the first time the production will be staged there — and the move represents far more than a new venue. It is a meaningful demonstration of regional cooperation and a reminder of what can be achieved when communities and organizations work together to broaden access to the arts.
For decades, The Nutcracker has served as a holiday tradition for many in our region. From shows at The Capitol Theatre to smaller venues, its familiar music, imaginative storytelling and cast of characters bridge generations. By bringing this performance to St. Clairsville, Oglebay Institute is making that magic more accessible — especially to families that may not have had the chance to experience it before.
Dance Director Cheryl Pompeo summed it up well when she said the Institute is “excited to take the show on the road and bring this production to the brand-new Unified Bank Jr. Rec Center.” An organization such as Oglebay Institute, with its decades-long commitment to the arts, understands that outreach strengthens communities, inspires young people and keeps traditions alive.
The decision also highlights the growing role of St. Clairsville’s new recreation center as an anchor for community events. The Unified Bank Jr. Rec Center opened six months ago with the intention of serving many needs — sports, gatherings, recreation and now, the performing arts.
“The main purpose of this facility was truly to be for a variety of events, and this one in particular, we are thrilled to host,” said Recreation Director Eric Gay.
Facilities such as the rec center do far more than house activities; they signal a city’s willingness to invest in its residents, especially its young people.
St. Clairsville officials have made it clear they view the center as more than a building; it’s an opportunity. It represents pride. And its ability to attract a well-respected cultural institution such as Oglebay Institute demonstrates its potential to become a hub for quality programming throughout the year. In many ways, the Nutcracker performance on Dec. 6 is just the beginning.
The event also gives residents a chance to see for themselves what the new recreation center has to offer. A high-profile event like The Nutcracker introduces the center to new audiences while reinforcing its purpose as a shared resource.
Families in St. Clairsville — and across Belmont County — now have an additional, affordable way to enjoy the arts this holiday season. We encourage you to get our and enjoy the show.
